Even though the Lemond Bishop story has always been a minor background story, I was always under the impression that they planned to expand this story line at some point. Lana’s connection to the show (besides Kalinda) has been unclear. In Season One, she is investigating Glenn Childs and Peter but that was dropped. Then she mentions to Kalinda that she is aware of the the existence of the tapes from when Glenn Childs wiretapped the Florrick’s phone. But that was dropped too.
But we became aware of her connection to Lemond Bishop in 2x14 Net Worth. I didn’t remember that she talked to Kalinda about Bishop in a previous episode because it seemed insignificant at the time. This is their conversation:
Kalinda: How’s work?
Lana: Okay, MS-13 is growing. Now, a meth gang is like a shark. It has to keep moving, or it dies. And from what I hear, it’s moving to Chicago. Joining forces with a local gang. A entrepreneur that you might know.
Kalinda: Who?
Lana: Lemond Bishop?
Lana: I have an offer for you. Come work for me. It’s not good at Lockhart Gardner and it won’t be good for quite some time.
Kalinda: And why is that?
Lana: Your firm is representing Bishop, the drug dealer.
Kalinda: Yeah he has legitimate interests.
Lana: He has no legitimate interests. The firm is in danger. Come work for me.
Kalinda: We had this conversation. I like where I am.
Now, I do not approve of Lana’s investigation of Kalinda. I don’t like anyone coming after Kalinda. But it makes a lot of sense. Obviously the FBI needs a way to get information about Bishop and using his law firm is a smart idea. Kalinda’s side work for him (whatever it may be) is a good target, it is a good way to investigate what Bishop is doing without directing investigating Bishop. Lana questioned Bishop about Kalinda but she still has an opportunity to involve Bishop.
Based on Kalinda and Lana’s conversation in 2x14 and the fact that they continue to mention Bishop, I think that Lockhart/Gardner representing Bishop is going to become a problem at some point for them. They have been setting up the story so they could expand on it later. And I think that Lana’s investigation of Kalinda was a way to open that door.
There is not one cast member/character that is not brilliant.
“A woman over 50 who is at the top of her game and still feminine and there’s still guys knocking on her door - I think those are a lot of things that we just don’t see portrayed in movies or television. Diane is a rather new creature and a groundbreaking character.” —Christine Baranski [x]
